Easy and inclusive assessment for Primary Schools

Most mainstream infant, junior or primary schools today include pupils with a mixture of abilities. This means teachers are faced with the challenge of tracking each pupil’s individual progress, which can vary significantly across a class of 30 children.

Primary schools need to be able to assess progress effectively across EYFS (for Reception), Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum, as well as for pupils working below Age Related Expectations. This also needs to be communicated to parents in a meaningful way to increase parental engagement, crucial for the positive impact it is known to have on educational outcomes.

Making assessment easier

Our Connecting Steps assessment software has been designed by teachers, for teachers. Our curriculum specialists work closely with our software developers to build and refine assessment frameworks (to use within the software) that work for teachers – and are designed to make teachers’ lives easier. So teachers can spend their time doing what they do best – teaching!

Making assessment inclusive

All change in SEND assessment with the removal of P Levels and introduction of new pre-key stage standards

Recent changes in the Government’s guidance on SEND assessment, including the removal of P Levels, has left many primary schools looking for a new approach to assess their pupils with SEND. We believe that the new pre-key stage standards are too narrow to be used for ongoing assessment. Teachers need assessment frameworks that show the progress that pupils with SEND make and give next steps. Our latest assessment frameworks, used within our Connecting Steps assessment software, have been designed to meet these needs.

Although Progression Steps is recommended for pupils with SEND, in some cases Primary Steps is the best option for your school. Particularly if you wish to record comparable data and report pupil progress in the same way for both mainstream and SEND pupils. It includes the End of Year Outcomes and the first 3 levels of our Progression Steps for pupils working below Year 1. Autism Progress, our autism profiling tool, is also used in Primary schools to help support staff working with pupils who have autism to better understand how a child's autism affects them and recommend ability-relevant support strategies.

Combining multiple curriculums into one software package means that primary schools are able to track the progress of pupils with mixed abilities across Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. This also means your school only needs to manage and train staff on a how to use one system.

Demonstrate pupil progress with photo/video evidence

Evisense, our evidence management system is designed to make capturing evidence of learning in the classroom easier. Developed in response to feedback from teachers frustrated with the amount of time spent collating supporting evidence, Evisense can be used to collect photos, videos, audio and documents to create a portfolio of a child's educational journey. This digital solution eliminates the laborious task of cutting and pasting photographs into reports, so staff can focus on teaching. Evisense enables schools to build a vital bank of evidence that can be used to demonstrate student’s progress, moderate work, as well as engage parents.
